Blow as Another Kenyan Athlete Is Banned For Doping

Kenya is hit with another ban over the use of ‘illegal’ substances, this time round the hammer falling on an 18-year old runner.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has announced that African Youth Games 800m silver medalist Angela Munguti has tested positive for banned substances- a violation of IAAF Anti-doping rules.

“The AIU confirms a provisional suspension against Angela Ndungwa Munguti of Kenya for the presence of a prohibited substance, a violation of the IAAF Anti-Doping Rules,” the body stated.

According to AIU, Angela, who was part of the team which represented the Kenya at the Youth Olympics last year in Argentina, tested positive for Norandrosterone which is a prohibited substance, contrary to the Article 2.1 of the Anti-doping code.

“It is each athlete’s personal duty to ensure no prohibited substance enters his or her body. Athletes are responsible for any prohibited substance or its metabolites or markers present in their samples. Accordingly, it is not necessary that intent, fault, negligence or knowing Use on the Athlete’s part to be demonstrated in order to establish an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2,” the anti-doping rule states.

Anjela Munguti finished third during the national Under-20 trials held in June 2018, where she clocked 2;08.02, about two minutes shy of her personal best (2:06.21).

She joins the growing list of Kenyan athletes busted for use of banned substances.  Notable Kenyan name banned for doping most recently is Philip Kimutai who was suspended after testing positive for Testosterone.
