Last year, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang recommended that the new Kaspabet Stadium be named after the current record holder in Men’s Marathon Eliud Kipchoge. This was met with a lot of backlash from stakeholders who did not want the Kipchoge Keino’s name phased out from the stadium.

As a result, the governor retaliated his decision and Kipchoge Keino’s name was retained.

I hereby clarify that Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet will not be renamed; athletics legend Kipchoge Keino is a highly respected man in Nandi County and his name will not be phased out,” said Sang at the time.

In return, the governor promised to build a new stadium in honor of the younger Kipchoge.

“We have started construction works for a new sports complex in Kapsabet at a cost of Sh100 million and it will be named after world record holder Eliud Kipchoge,” he added.

The Training complex is expected to have a 200-bed residential training camp, a gymnasium, art studio, a swimming gallery; among other sporting facilities and was set to be completed this September.

Interestingly, over a year later and with Eliud Kipchoge having already made history by becoming the first man to run a marathon race in under 2 hours, Stephen Sang came up with a bizarre way of celebrating this feat.

The governor stepped out with a 7,000Shs Scarf to Celebrate Kipchoge’s record-breaking run.

Is this how we celebrate our heroes? Maybe that’s just how Sang does it but we have not forgotten of the promise he gave to the finest marathoner in history. He promised a Training Complex but where is it? or even better, how far is the construction?
