Here is the Film That Will Represent Kenya at the Oscars This Year

Kenyan film Subira has been selected to represent the country at the Oscars awards in the Best International feature film category.

Taking to social media, Kenya Film Commission broke the news.

“SUBIRA is Kenya’s official submission for the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category!” they said.

The OSCARS Selection Committee Kenya made a call for submission on Monday 19th for Kenyan filmmakers to submit their respective film projects to the committee for their consideration of selecting one of those films.

The film entries received were Lusala and Subira. After thorough considerations of the right strengths to join OSCARS, Subira was selected to represent Kenya.

The film has been receiving great features since its premiere. After its launch, the film bagged 13 nominations in the prestigious Kalasha Awards. Some of which are: best lead actress/actor, best-supporting actress/actor.

In May, it was selected to be in competition at the Durban International Film Festival. Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is an annual film festival that takes place in Durban, South Africa.

Subira tells the story of a young girl who is determined to live her dream of being a swimmer against the odds of restrictive local customs and a looming arranged marriage to an upper-class family.

The main characters include Brenda Wairimu, Nice Githinji, Wambui Gitobu among other actors and actresses.

The film is by a Kenyan-Indian director Sippy Chadha and is based on her 2008 short film of the same name.
