Where’s the weed? Clues to Nairobi’s cannabis shortages

2,160 stones of bhang worth Sh2.5m seized by police in Salgaa on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway

Where’s the weed!?

That’s been a common Kenyan refrain lately. Shortages appeared almost immediately after police started bursting drug traffickers supplying the illegal drug in the city.

Going by the tweets going round by bhang smokers which remains illegal in the country, Kenyans who have been using the drug have been complaining of a shortage for two months now.

KOT has taken to social media to lodge complains urging the police to ‘go slow’ on such arrests, as it’s affecting supply and the cost of the illegal commodity.

Currently, prices are said to have doubled and coming across joints is almost impossible.

Lack of supply creates demand. And therefore, the price will be high.

The apparent shortage of weed (bhang) in Kenya is deliberate. The supply is being hoarded so that someone makes a lot of money out of it.

Drug peddlers in Kenya have began to run low on supplies.

Why?

Drugs lead to many violent crimes, including murder and kidnapping, which seriously threatens the country’s security and social stability and Kenya has pledged to tackle drug trafficking with police on high alert.

In March , Police seized bhang with a street value of more than Sh1.5 million following an accident on Naivasha-Nairobi highway on Saturday.

The transporter’s saloon car collided with another vehicle near Delamere Estates at about 5.30am, said Naivasha sub-county police commander Samuel Waweru.

Another consignment worth an estimated Sh4.5 million was found at a Nairobi estate when two people were caught offloading bhang.

In Makueni County, police confiscated bhang with a street value of more than Sh3 million in Emali town when they found the 6,180 rolls of bhang stuffed in sacks in a private car whose occupants abandoned it when they realised officers on patrol were following them.
