If we were to compare Kenya’s problems to diseases, corruption would be the deadly virus with seemingly no cure.

It is so bad that guys outside the country consider it to be our way of life.

The question is, which tribes are the most corrupt in the country?

The list is based on the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Noordin Haji’s findings.

10. EMBU

This Asian community is an officially recognized tribe in Kenya. What’s amazing about the Indians (Kenyan Asians) is that they still have strong ties to their traditions despite most of them being native Kenyans by birth.

However, they too seem to be part of the Kenyan culture of corruption as there are 15 Indians being investigated by the DPP.

8. LUHYAS

The community of 18 tribes with their own dialect is the second largest ethnic group in Kenya. They are mainly found in Western parts of Kenya like Bungoma and Kakamega.

29 people from the Luhya community are currently being investigated on instances of corruption.

Akamba people mainly occupy the Eastern parts of Kenya and have a population of over 5 million in 2019. You can find them in large numbers in Machakos and Kitui county.

As it stands, 31 Kamba people are to face prosecution in the near future.

6. MIJIKENDA

When you think Mijikenda, you think of the peaceful and loving community. Then again, your mind would be taken back to Kazungu Kambi’s many scandals which were dismissed by the High Court later on.

This community occupies the coast regions of Kenya and have 34 people being investigated by the DPP.

5. KISII

This one is a little bit confusing because we have the likes of Matiang’i, a no-nonsense person being a Kisii; yet we have 37 people from the same tribe being investigated by the DPP. How do those two facts go hand in hand? Hardworking yet corrupt.

This community occupies two counties in the country namely: Kisii County and Nyamira County.

4. KALENJINS

Well, this must be embarassing for the Deputy President, who is also facing criticism for his participation in the fight against corruption. Kalenjins are the third largest ethnic tribe in Kenya after the Kikuyu and the Luhya.

46 people from the tribe are being investigated by the DPP which is a huge number.

3. LUOS

It’s one thing for someone from the Luo Community to be at the forefront of fighting corruption and it is another thing entirely to be the third highest corrupt tribe in the country. Two contradicting truths at play here.

56 people have been shortlisted by Noordin Haji on accounts on corruption. Speaking of which, what happened to Dr. Evans Kidero’s cases?

2. SOMALIS

Second place goes to Somali/Borana people who are staunch business men and women in several towns in the country. 60 people from their tribe are facing charges of corruption, which is a huge number.

Surely, there can’t be a bigger number than this. Unfortunately, there is one tribe we haven’t talked about.

1. KIKUYUS

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tribe is the most corrupt tribe in Kenya. This is another case of him trying to fight corruption but his fellow tribesmen are giving him a bad reputation.

DPP Noordin Haji shortlisted 141 Kikuyu people who are being suspected on acts of corruption. 141 people. That’s double and add sum to the number of Somali people.
