“Our people came together to fight against colonialism as one… They asked themselves “for how long are we going to be treated as dogs?” and that is when people united to defeat colonialism. Afterwords, the animal called ethnicity moved in”
These were the words of Raila Odinga during the #HandshakeAnniversary at the Serena Hotel on Saturday.
According to the former Prime Minister, tribalism marked the beginning of divisions and poor governance in the country.
” Ethnicity is artificial. It is only the elite who compete to share the resources of the country among themselves who evoke that animal called ethnicity. It doesn’t exist at the common men.”
He said that the ethnic cocoon is what brought about the 2007 post election violence and some Kenyans ending up at the Hague.
Raila: The ethnic cocoons took us to 2007 and that’s how our people ended up at ICC. We tried to form a local tribunal but others said it will be manipulated. They said “Don’t be vague, let’s go to Hague” @KTNNewsKE #HandshakeAnniversary pic.twitter.com/7dVaAN9YBf— KTN News Alerts (@KTNNewsKE) March 9, 2019
In 2009, Isaac Rutto, who was the Chepalungu MP coined the infamous Don’t be vague, let’s go to Hague”
And this is how six Kenyans ended up at the Hague.
