Met Dept forewarns of melting days ahead

Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of pending hotter days ahead as temperatures continue to rise in several parts of the country including Nairobi and Mombasa.

In the latest weather alert issued on Tuesday, March 5, the Met department indicated Kenyans would experience unusually hot three weeks which may come with health consequences to people not used to these extremely high temperatures. According to the weather experts, temperatures in Nairobi are expected to rise to as high as 31.9°C, whereas those in Mombasa county, which is usually hotter than Nairobi, could soar up to 33°C in the coming days.

T he weather experts recommend you consume a lot of water to keep your body hydrated and wear lighter clothes as part of the coping mechanisms during the hot season.

The met department deputy director, Ayub Shaka, had earlier indicated scorching daytime temperatures in Nairobi would rise to as high as 31°C in March 2019. “The average annual temperatures in Nairobi are usually between 23°C and 24°C.

The daytime temperatures in the city can rise to over 28°C, and this can be stressful for those not used to this very high temperatures,” he said. At the moment, he said, Mandera is the hottest place in Kenya with temperatures of between 37°C and 39°C. Lodwar and Garissa follow with temperatures of 36°C and 35°C respectively.
