Boat made of flip-flops arrives at Mtwapa

Kenya’s coastal town, Mtwapa, received a unique rainbow colored homemade boat. The boat made of plastic waste and sandals halted at the beach.

The boat with the writings of ‘flipflop’, was sailing southward along East Africa’s coast as a campaign to create awareness of threat caused by plastic waste materials. Printed on it is ‘We’ll walk you in paradise’.

It is almost 2 years when the government of Kenya banned the use of plastic bags in the country because of pollution. NEMA took the order and acted upon which resulted in a better environment to live on.

However, this is not the case in the ocean regions as businesses are mushrooming and with poor disposal methods. Leading this initiative, the captain and engineer of the boat Ali Skanda said that he wanted to change the mindsets of people on proper ways to dispose off waste.

The boat’s voyage took it about  500 km South from Lamu island in Kenya to Zanzibar in  Tanzania which is equivalent to two weeks as from January 23, 2019.

Ali Skanda said that they made six stops in communities around the shores which includes schools, local community, and even authorities for beach cleaning and events to educate the public on matters pollution.
