Top politicians set to eat with big spoons on Matiang’i’s appointment

At least three politicians will have a smooth ride in local politics following the dramatic elevation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Tuesday, political analyst Gideon Mamboleo has claimed.

In what could be his preparations for national politics, Matiang’i was appointed Chairman of powerful National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, which will among others, supervise and monitor government projects.

And according to Mamboleo, Matiang’i will now have little time for local politics with sources linking him to the race to succeed Governor John Nyagarama in 2022.

“He has no business at all in local politics following the appointment. It seems they are grooming him for a bigger seat in 2022. That’s why he’s likely to exit local politics.”

He added: “Those gubernatorial front runners like Timothy Bosire, Ben Momanyi and Walter Nyambati can now breath. Matiang’i had started positioning himself and he’s not easy to beat at all.”

Mr Bosire is the ODM treasurer and served Kitutu Masaba in the last parliament while Momanyi is the current Borabu MP. Nyambati narrowly lost governorship to Nyagarama in 2017.

In recent weeks, Matiang’i has been traversing Nyamira County during weekends further keeping his competitors guessing about his next move.
