Ramos sets new record

Sergio Ramos netted his 100th career goal as Real Madrid took a 3-0 win against Leganes on Wednesday evening. The defender is Los Blancos’ 17th top scorer of all time having scored 80 times for the club

The center-back scored from the spot to give Real a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round of 16 tie against. That strike took Ramos to 80 goals for Los Blancos, making him their 17th top scorer of all time, while he also has three for Sevilla and 17 for the Spanish national team. After signing from Madrid’s La Liga rivals in 2005, the defender has converted some crucial goals for the club, the most important of which came in 2014 when he equalised against Atletico Madrid in the 93rd minute of the Champions League final.

Atletico had led for the majority of the game but Real would eventually win 4-1 after stoppage time, goals from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo ending Atleti’s hopes and securing a 10th European Cup for the club. Two years later Ramos and Real would repeat the trick, this time beating their city rivals after Ramos had given them a 1-0 lead although penalties would be needed to clinch the trophy.

Although the defender has not netted in such high-profile matches for his country, he did get on the score sheet against England back in October when he struck a stoppage-time consolation goal as Spain lost 3-2 to the Three Lions in the Nations League. Ramos has taken over penalty duties for Madrid since the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Serie A champions Juventus and has scored four goals in La Liga this term which gives him a strong chance of surpassing his previous season-best of seven.

Despite those goals from their centre-back, the European champions have struggled in the league campaign this term and sit in fifth place having seen manager Julen Lopitagui sacked after a disappointing start. Madrid are back in action Sunday with as they look to get back on track in league play with a clash against Betis. The club will them move to the second leg against Leganes, with is scheduled to take place next Wednesday.
