Kipchoge Keino is expected today to offer a testimony against former CS Hassan Wario today in court. Both yesterday reported to the director of public prosecution as it was stated and the files are supposed to be opened today.
The police announced that they are no longer pursuing Kipchoge but are treating him as a state witness after questioning him for close to six hours.
The former President of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) was supposed to be charged with allocating his son Ian Kipchoge Ksh2.5 million for air tickets and allowances during the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The decision was arrived at after the detectives learned that the marathoner did not sign any documents involving the travel.
The remaining suspects; former Sports CS Hassan Wario, former Director of Administration Haron Komen and former Finance Officer Patrick Nkabu have been ordered to appear in court on Friday 19, to take a plea on mismanagement of funds.
The prosecution is accusing Wario of improperly benefiting six individuals by financing their travel to the Rio Olympics, causing loss of public funds worth Ksh5,846,346.
He allegedly allocated Ksh1,506,391 each to Adan Enow and James Singh. Richard Bura and Monica Sairo were paid Ksh918,391, while Eunice Kerich and Samuel Njuguna each took Ksh498,391.
Nkabu failed to comply with guidelines on the management of public funds that led to the misuse of Sh22,540,800.
Komen reportedly authorized an unlawful payment in excess of Ksh15.3 million as allowances to members of the Kenyan team.
On Monday, Kenya’s ambassador to Russia, who is also a former Sports PS, Richard Ekai, together with ex-NOCK officials Stephen Kiptanui and Francis Kinyiri were also charged over the Rio scandal.
