KNH nurses demand for security

Kenyatta National Hospital Nurses are demanding enhancement of security after nurse who was strangled by the deceased relatives fighting for her life in the High Dependency Unit.

Nurses demanded respect from patients and their relatives. The hospital management also condemned the assault which has led to the arrest of one suspect.

“You would think it was a wrestling match. The attacker beat her with a blunt object before jumping on her, covering her mouth and strangling her,” Kenya National Union of Nurses vice chairman Moses Chirchir said yesterday.

KNH nurses temporarily held a demonstration demanding enhanced security.

Sexual assault

Several female nurses at the hospital have complained about harassment by male patients in the orthopedic wing.

A nurse, who spoke to the Nation in confidence for fear of being victimized, said “They tell me to my face that they want to sleep with me.”

The nurses have resorted to wearing trousers to work, not as a preference but for protection. Their colleagues in other wards wear tunics.
