Why Chebukati Asks DPP and EACC to Take Action Against Chiloba

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has written to the DPP and EACC to take action against fired commission CEO Ezra Chiloba

Speaking on Monday, Chebukati indicated he wants Chiloba to be investigated and held accountable over alleged procurement irregularities during the 2017 general elections.

“It is now up to the DPP and the DCI to investigate and substantiate the claims. For my part, I am of the view that all those who are involved in any misdeals must be held accountable. Be it any staff or myself, they must be brought to book.

“This is why the CEO was fired and we want to reiterate that as a commission we are not asleep as many have been made to believe. We shall not be distracted. It is true we are not 100 per cent accurate but we shall not just sit as public funds are embezzled,” he remarked

He was addressing members of public at Wote Town in Makueni during the official launch of continuous voter registration exercise.

Chebukati also revealed that Chiloba had previously opposed reforms at the commission.

He further mentioned that  Chiloba had on various occasions opposed an internal audit to ascertain the cost of the 2017 general election.

Chiloba was fired on Friday after a meeting between the IEBC Chairman and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye.

This was after Chiloba allegedly failed to honour an invitation to appear before the Commission’s disciplinary committee.

The Commission wanted Chiloba to explain some of the decisions he made leading to possible loss of public funds.

Chiloba was on suspension since April due to allegations of gross misconduct.
