Why Manchester City will struggle to defend the league

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has admitted that Manchester City will find it hard to win the title this season after their dominance last season.

Manchester City have continued from where they left off from last season, winning all but one game and still maintain their unbeaten record in the league. City put five past hapless Cardiff City away from home a result that lifted them to second by virtue of a better goal difference compared to Chelsea. The only blemish for City has been their home defeat to Olympic Lyon in the UEFA Champions League.

Hughton admitted that City will find it tough to retain the league, “It will be a harder season for them this season but they are still very capable of winning this division. What happens is they can still be as good again but the reaction of the teams that finished below them is and will always be different.”

The former Norwich manager also spoke of Guardiola’s influence on English football, “It’s been massive. The great managers – whether it’s instant or they earn it – have a big impact on a division. There was (Arsene) Wenger many years ago and the impact he had at that time. Then Jose (Mourinho) and the impact he had playing in a different way and the spirit his teams have.”
