Good morning,

There is no reprieve for Kenyans as Housing Bill was passed in Senate on Tuesday evening.

President William Ruto secured a significant victory yesterday in his efforts to solidify the contentious Housing Levy, as Kenya Kwanza senators thwarted amendments put forth by the minority faction.

During a marathon session that extended to nearly 7pm, senators aligned with the President decisively rejected amendments suggested by the minority, dashing hopes for relief among many Kenyans.

Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi announced the final voting results, revealing that 27 senators backed the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023, thereby endorsing it along with the government’s proposed amendments.

Moving amendments proposed by the minority side, Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni wanted the deductions capped at Sh2,500. He also wanted the levy to be paid at the rate of 1.5 per cent of the net salary of an employee.
