Wanyama’s Continued Stay At Spurs Doing More Harm Than Good To His Career

In November last year, during the last international break of the calendar year, the National team Harambee Stars played Togo in an African Cup Of Nations qualifier at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

One of the main talking points from the 1-1 draw was how the Kenyan skipper Victor Wanyama played poorly. The midfielder misplaced not less than five simple passes and at some point had fans asking for him to be subbed off.

It was quite a turnaround as just four days earlier, Wanyama had put in a wonderful performance as the team drew away to Egypt in the first qualifier match.

That difference in the two performances can only be explained by the player not being at the required fitness levels to play high-intensity matches four days apart.

This is exactly why it was puzzling to see Wanyama turn down a move to Club Brugge in the summer of last year and he again failed to secure a move in the January transfer window, even on loan.

He has barely played this season despite being fit and was exempted from the Champions League squad by Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho. That is a clear sign that Mourinho does not trust the player and will continue to bench him or completely not have him in his matchday squads.

His continued stay at Spurs will only do more harm than good to his career and he could find himself losing his spot in the national team despite being the Captain.

A decision needs to be made on his future because the signs clearly point to his spell at Spurs ending in disappointing fashion.
