He Joined Manchester United Too Early, Netherlands Coach Reveals Why Winger Struggled at Old Trafford

Netherlands national team head coach Ronald Koeman says Memphis Depay joined Manchester United a little early when he moved to Old Trafford from Dutch side, PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

The winger played for United between 2015 and 2017 and largely before he was sold to French side, Lyon.

He had managed to re-establish himself in France and is one of the key players for the Ligue 1 giants. He has been linked with a move away from the club with several elite European clubs after his services.

But it’s with the National team where the 25-year old has impressed under Koeman. He has scored in nearly each and every game for the Oranges since the former Everton boss took over.

Man United and Tottenham are some of the clubs interested in signing the Dutch international and in an interview, Koeman said the winger struggled at United because he joined the team too soon. He went on to hail him for the progress that he has made in the last few years.

“I think he’s a top player and maybe during his time at Manchester United, he was a little bit too young.

“He’s now more experienced and what he’s showed and what he has done for the national team is great and I’m really glad that we have that kind of player in our national team,” he added.

Depay is a doubt for Netherlands Euro 2020 qualification match against Northern Ireland slated for Saturday and Koeman says they will evaluate him further to determine if he will play.

“We have to wait for that, we’ll make that decision later. Yesterday he did some parts of the training sessions, he will do his normal training session today and then we need to decide.

“Everybody who plays needs to be more than 100 percent and that’s the situation,” he said.
