Kenyan Premier League is on its lowest moment following the exit of sponsors SportPesa who were forced to close shops in Kenya citing unfriendly business environment from the government.

With only five matches gone this season, the league managers are contemplating suspending the league if things remain as they are.

A close source at the KPL secretariat has confirmed to Opera News that they’ve knocked all doors and none is opening so far.

The source, who spoke on anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, further revealed that last week, KPL wrote to SuperSport for help.

“KPL is almost collapsing. As it stands, we’ve run out of cash and I don’t think we can sustain the season for long. SportPesa’s exit was a big blow to us. Since then, we’ve tried looking for sponsors from all corners but none is coming through.

“I can confirm that we were forced to write a letter to SuperSport last week requesting for their financial assistance. We’re however still waiting for their response,” the source said.

In April 2017, SuperSport whose contract was to run till 2020, terminated their deal with Kenyan Premier League citing a ruling which increased the number of teams in the league from 16 to 18, as their major reason for exit.

The cited ruling was made by Sports Disputes Tribunal, and it was a win for Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa who had rooted for 18 clubs in the premier league.

“SuperSport have, today (April 7, 2017), informed us via a letter that our contract with them is terminated. They say we violated the initial agreement by allowing two more teams into the league as was ruled by Sports Disputes Tribunal,” KPL Chairman Ambrose Rachier said at that time.
