Seven pupils have lost their lives after a classroom collapsed on them at Precious Talent School along Ngong Road on Monday morning.
Reports indicate that the Standard six, seven and eight pupils bore the brunt of the mishap after the first floor caved in and crashed on the ground floor.
The school’s manager, Mr Moses Wainaina Ndirangu, told reporters that the floor had at least 200 students, while the school’s total population stood at 800.
He blamed the mishap on a sewer line construction which he said had weakened the buildings in the school.
Early responders are said to have arrived one and a half hours after the incident occurred at 6:50 am according to a community leader in Ngando ward of Dagoretti South.
While Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie blamed the incident on the quality of workmanship of the construction, the manager said the school had had no such incidents in the past.
Distressed responders reported tragic fractures in 30 of the pupils who were pulled out of the rubble.
No reports have surfaced on the state of the pupils who were evacuated to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Rescue operations are underway, with reports indicating that Nairobi County Government and Red Cross teams were already on the ground taking part in the rescue of pupils trapped in the rubble.
