Betway betting firm is back to business after almost two months in the cold. The firm announced on Thursday that it has been cleared by KRA and the Betting Control and Licencing Board (BCLB) to resume operations.

The company informed customers that a 20% withholding tax will be applied on all winnings following the government’s new demand on Sh61 billion from betting companies.

“We are BACK! Enjoy our new & improved 4 To Score, Win Boost & awesome new Money Back Boost! Remember, a 20% withholding tax will be applied to all winnings,” they said through their official Twitter handle.

Betway was one of the 27 companies whose licenses were not renewed after June 30 after a crackdown which questioned their suitability to operate in the country.

The company’s resumption has come at a time the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal and Human Rights is demanding answers from the BCLB and Interior Secretary Fred Matiang’i over unrealistic charges and acting against court orders.

The committee chaired by Samson Cheragei (Nandi) said it reeks of impunity for the regulator to suspend operations of the companies as well as to deport some of their directors when the matter was pending before the High Court.
