Deaf Models Defy Disability, Display amazing Talent At Kenya Fashion Contest

Kenya witnessed the inauguration of the first Miss and Mr Deaf Kenya Beauty Pageant 2019 at the Nairobi Film Centre on Thursday.

The fete to honour models with hearing impairment was organised by the Deaf Artists Culture Association of Kenya, DACAK in collaboration with the Kenya Film Classification Board, KFCB.

The moral police boss and KFCB CEO Dr Ezekiel Mutua presided over the event where a wonderful display of beauty and talent from the deaf pageant proved that disability is not inability.

 

The Mr and Miss Deaf Kenya Gala focus to propagate social, economic, political and talent development of Persons Living with Disabilities, PLWDs.

Dr Mutua expressed his commitment to support talents among people with special needs.

“Film remains a critical platform to highlight the plight of PLWD as well as empower them through their talents and gifts,” Dr Mutua stated.

The event is aimed at creating public awareness about HIV/AIDS, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Poverty at the same time addressing the plight of deaf persons in the society.

The pageant also aims at teaching the contestants to learn about themselves, to foster independence, and to identify individual strengths and collaborative efforts.

Winners of the inaugural Mr and Miss Deaf Beauty Pageant 2019 to represent Kenya at the International Deaf Beauty Pageant set for July 2019 in Russia.

DACAK was established in 1986 to lobby and champion the rights of people with hearing loss.
