Eyebrows were raised when President Uhuru Kenyatta decided to axe Rashid Echesa as the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, culture, and heritage but even more so when Amina Mohammed was called in to replace him. Most Kenyans did not see her as being suitable for the role, some even claimed she would not last a year on the job.
However, the soft spoken lady has let her actions do the talking and judging by her deeds in the first few months into the role, she is more than capable. She has been visiting most relevant sports organisations in Kenya, first being the Kenya Rugby Union.
She engages with them too, discussing on how to take the sport forward, something Echesa could not do during his tenure.
As if that is not enough, Amina attends local events in a bid to improve on our heritage an culture. On Wednesday, she was at the Safaricom Jazz festival where she even performed!
When was the last time a Cabinet Secretary welcomed a winning Kenyan athlete in the country? Well, Miss Amina was at the airport to meet London Marathon women’s Champion Brigid Kosgey congratulating her for her achievements and making the nation proud.
Her devotion to the task is unmatched by her predecessors and if anything her doubters are being quietly dealt with. Just a few months in, Amina Mohamed has already done more than Echesa ever did, and you can bet there’s more to come!
