Starehe Member of Parliament cum musician  Charles Kanyi Njagua popularly known as Jaguar has proposed a motion before the parliament if passed will see the retirement age of public servant lowered.

Jaguar argues that most youths are jobless because old folks are holding to top public jobs.

” I today gave a notice of motion in Parliament to have the minimum retirement age of public servants lowered from 60 years down to 50 years so as to enable our youth of whom majority are below the age of 35yrs acquire employment whilst at the same time allow our senior citizens engage other entrepreneurial activities while they are still physically and mentally productive”. he wrote.

However, his proposed motio has extracted mixed reactions from his followers.

divilove Lol to 50years? Where is the cash to finance their retirement. This is rediculous. First world countries are increasing the retirement age to 67 and we 3rd world reducing to 50 years? Why dont we Think of empowering the south and creating more source of employement…let’s Think out of the Box..

Chimwani good idea, Mhesh! Have you checked whether NSSF has the money to pay the retirees?

Can you also do the same to the law makers? Some of them are very old. Even the kne behind you is already old.

ZandekenyahThis is a stupid idea…..it will still be 60….civil servants ensures continuity in government

Smukundi It’s a good idea, but 50 might be low boss. Folks are still very productive at 50. What do we do with those unproductive 50 year olds? It’s just a transfer of the problem from one age to the next.

Fiffie jay It’s a good idea you got but l don’t see it going far. Majority of those who can support are above or very close to the 50. Who will save us?

fransicmuasa True mheshimiwa youth are lacking job due to lack of retirement

mu.turi Great motion👏👏

Jaynette Mheshimiwa, a good motion that needs analytics . we first need to establish Where the majority of the unemployed population lies(I.e age bracket) .we have enough Kenyans who are in their mid and late 30’s and are yet to secure employment (both formal and informal). Giving an example one secure a job at 37 years. Being left with only 13 year to plan for the future , support dependants and rise up the job scale. Probably promotion may not come easy due lack of relevant experience .By the time relevant experience will have been gained and its time to make a career move , retirement will be knocking at the door. The retirement package due to the number of years worked will not be enough to sustain the retiree for long since this it pegged on the number of years worked.this may not be enough to engage in entrepreneurial activities where only tender-preneur benefit .I think the motion will only “treat the symptoms” of unemployment and not “cure” unemployment. If pilferage of public funds stops completely and instead there funds are utilized in growing a sustainable economy we would not be facing unemployment.
