Betty Wanjiru: The Gallant Soldier Leading the Anti-Corruption War

A lot has been said about Alaa Salah, the 21 year old university student, who captured the imagination of the world after pictures of her leading the Sudan protests went viral on the internet.

When the people of Sudan needed a hero, the streets provided one in the name of Alaa, the gorgeous woman with a melodious voice. Back home, we have picketed so much on social media about the runaway corruption in government.

Yet the government is doing nothing to cab the vice. Politicians have taken the war on corruption to settle old scores. On Sunday, during a church service along Jogoo Rd, Jubilee nominated MP Maina Kamanda said even a class two pupil knows the most corrupt person in Kenya. Sonko told us that the same Kamanda had grabbed road reserves.

It is clear that politicians are not going to help us fight corruption. Kenyans we are on our own.

Fortunately, one gallant soldier has decided that enough is enough and taken the war to the streets. Her name is Betty Wanjiru.

Betty understands that corruption is not going to go away unless something is done. On Tuesday, she led other like minded Kenyans for a #BeyondZeroCorruption demonstration at Uhuru Park.

It was chaotic, nasty and with casualties. But Betty could not relent. In the end, she was arrested and detained at the Central Police Station.

There was an uproar on social media leading to her release at around 1AM on Wednesday.

But the big question is what happens next? Has Betty planted the seed of revolution in us? Are we tired of corruption? Can we go the Sudan way and remove all despots?

Because for sure, all our problems are caused by politicians.

I invoke the spirit of Betty in everyone reading this story.

We are tired.
