The Luo Nation has for a long time now been condemned to the opposition as far as the Country’s political groupings are concerned.

This has widely been attributed to the fact that the man Luos have for long looked up to, Opposition Chief Raila Odinga, has time and again failed to win any serious Presidential elections held in this Country.

The Community’s love for the Opposition has time and again put them at an awkward position as it has in the past failed to get serious government projects rolled out in the area. Well, if not for the 9th March handshake between Uhuru and Raila, the Luo Nation would have still been disadvantaged.

The handshake should however not make us forget that the Community is still in the Opposition, a position that is now seriously worrying a number of Legislators from the area.

Some 12 MPs from Nyanza have now said that the Luos are tired of being in the Opposition after each and every election.

The leaders now want the community to find a way to make it to Government so as to help promote development in the region.

Speaking at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Kisumu West, the MPs said the region has been in the past deprived of development by past regimes for being in the opposition for decades.

The legislators, who were hosted by Kisumu West MP Olago Aluoch, kicked off a tour of Nyanza region to explain to the community why they support the handshake and the war on corruption.

Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch said the Luo community is not constitutionally mandated to be in the opposition.

“We cannot be in perpetual war as Luo nation. We have been in perpetual isolation for 50 years. Let others also oppose the government,” he said.

The Mathare lawmaker added, “For now we are fully behind the handshake, and fight against corruption.”

The constitutional does not compel us to be in the opposition, Oluoch said. Nyanza being in the opposition for decades, he said, has exposed us to lack of development.
