In the years leading up to the attainment of Independence in 1963, the British colonialists shot Kenyans dead as a sport!
Having dinner at the Norfork Hotel, Nairobi, the white settlers used to aim at the Africans passing by in the distance and shoot.
Any white person who could shoot dead the African assing by would arn himself a round of drinks and a bigger round of applause.
For this reason, Africans were looked at like moving targets ready to be aimed at.
However, the sport would later end tragically after one White settler shot dead his cook.
Mr Peter Poole had this cook that he liked so much that he hired his cousin to be his homeguard.
While the cook, Kamawe Musunge, had one of the best culinary skills at the time, Poole did not like one thing about Musunge.
One day as Poole was taking a morning stroll, his dog ran towards cook Musunge, who threw a stone at the dog.
In a fit of rage, Poole drew his gun and shot dead the cook, killing him instantly.
But it did not end here. Poole was arraigned in Court and charged with murder.
The court found him guilty of murder and he was sentenced to death by hanging.
However, some 25,000 people collected their signatures to petition the Governor then to pardon Poole.
The governor declined to pardon Mr Poole, and the matter went further to the Queen of England.
In an unexpected move, the Queen also declined to offer the pardon. Poole was hanged thereafter, and doctors confirmed he was dead.
Later, it emerged that Poole had shot a Kenyan Policeman after a brief argument. At the time, Poole said hi only regret was that the African policeman did not die from the gunshots.
In the ruling that hanged Poole, some 60 years ago, the sport came to a tragic end.
