Manchester United’s derby clash with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City is one that will be closely watched by everyone who follows the English Premier League. A Manchester City win will all but end Liverpool’s hopes of winning their first league title in 28 years and ending Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top 4 this season.

Pep Guardiola’s well-oiled machine is on the verge of completing a domestic treble having already won the Carabao cup this season, are in the FA Cup final against Watford. Should they win the league this season, it will be the first time a team has won the league on two consecutive seasons since Manchester United did it under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008-2009.

After a winless first campaign in his first season, Pep Guardiola won his the league title and the Carabao cup in his second season, winning the league with a record 100 points. This season, however, Liverpool are giving Manchester City a run for their money and any slipup from the Cityzens will render their title defense invalid.

Contrast that with Manchester United who have not scored from open play in 30 minutes of football. Their last goal was a Paul Pogba penalty against Westham at Old Trafford. They have lost 6 of their last 8 matches and personal pride will be at stake when they go out on the pitch.

A Manchester United win feels unlikely but given the stakes, they might spring a surprise especially at home, even if it means handing Liverpool the title on a silver platter.
