Devastating floods a big blow to Kenya economies

The widespread flooding and landslide damage triggered by torrential rains in Kenya has disrupted public transport system and distribution network across the Country.

This has brought serious damage to agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries, dealing a serious blow to economies in areas highly affected.

Among the transport systems in the affected include Narok-Mai Mahiu road following heavy rainfall.

At Nairobi County transport system was also affected as roads were flooded.

Many farmers in areas affected by the downpours were in a state of shock after seeing the damage inflicted to their produce.

Many city residents have, however, pointed out that the flooding is mainly caused by an inadequate drainage system and construction on waterways allegedly approved by City Hall and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The consequences of floods, both negative and positive, vary greatly depending on the location and extent of flooding, and the vulnerability and value of the natural and constructed environments they affect.

Nairobi County government yesterday said that the government has put in place all the relevant measure to ensure that no one is affected.

In Westlands area, roads and parking lots were quickly flooded after the mid-afternoon rain that lasted about 50 minutes.

Ojijo Road was turned into a small river with motorists having to maneuver through flooded sections.

In Kenyafloods have displaced over 260,000 people and killed 100 others in at least 15 of the country’s 47 counties, according to the United Nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.
