Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga has been termed as one of the best performing governors in Mount Kenya region.
In the effort to fight drought in his County and realization of the food security, the governor distributed fish fingerlings to farmers at Kirimukuyu Ward in Mathira-West Sub-County.
He distributed 10,000 Tilapia fingerlings to local fish farmers, which will be ready for harvest after a period of six months.
“Some of the advantages of cage fish farming is that fish live in their natural habitat and is also economic activity,” he said.
The County Government of Nyeri also promised to establish a park at the area, which will serve as a tourist attraction site.
The cages offer fish protection from predators and there is also controlled feeding and harvesting.
A similar method of fish farming is being practiced at Chinga Dam, Othaya. Income generating projects for the locals have also been established there.
Those present during the event included, Kirimukuyu MCA Hon. Anthony Ndagita, CEC Agriculture Robert Thuo, CEC Trade Diana Kendi, C.O Agriculture Ruth Mwangi, Water CEC Fredrick Kinyua and Ward administrator Peter Wang’ondu among others.
