The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya, FIDA has issued a statement condemning the high rate of femicides in Kenya.

According to the statement issued by FIDA chair, Ms Josephine Mong’are, over 50 femicide cases have been reported between January and April 2019.

Ms Mong’are stated that FIDA is horrified following the brutal murder of Moi University Medical student Ivy Wangeci and Subukia Prison warden Caroline Jepchirchir on 9th and 10th April respectively.

During the weekend two ladies also fell victim of gender-based violence and are in critical conditions.

“This is a wake-up call to the realisation of the erosion of national values and the status of the nation on the disregard of Human Rights.” Stated the report in part.

FIDA urged Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Security, CS Fred Matiang’i to enforce legal structures for protection of women in the country.
