Fate of Mandera patients now in limbo

Cuban Doctors Speak About their Two-Week Stay in Mandera County, 'Kenya's Hotbed of Insecurity'

Patients from Mandera county are the worst hit by the abduction of two Cuban specialists Friday.

Dr Assel Herera Correa (general physician) and Dr Landy Rodriguez (surgeon), who are attached at the Mandera County Referral Hospital had indicated that they had adapted well to the new environment.

Dr Rodriguez used to handle 10 surgical cases daily.

Majority of patients in Mandera have been praising the two medics for their commitment to offering services.

Just a month after the medics were posted at the Mandera Referral hospital, Amina Mohamed successfully delivered through a caesarean section performed by Dr Landhi Rodriguez.

The hospital had started experiencing long queues due to the presence of the Cuban doctors.

Amina had said residents are flocking the hospital due to the presence of the Cuban doctors.

“You will be surprised that many patients, especially from the villages, are now coming to the county referral hospital for treatment, thanks to the presence of the Cuban doctors. We have faith in them,” she said.

Another patient, Halima Yussuf, who has had five miscarriages in a row was optimistic she will get help from the Cuban doctors. “I just can’t carry any pregnancy to term,” she said.

“My efforts to get assistance from local doctors have failed. I hope and pray that under the supervision of the Cuban doctors I will be able to carry my pregnancy to full term, deliver safely and cuddle my baby like other mothers.”

Doctors Herrera Correa and Rodriguez said they are committed to treat their patients.

Rodriguez had initially posed wary about security.

Kenya imported 100 doctors from Cuba who arrived in June. The government said they would fill gaps in the public health sector.

By then the medic said local residents were friendly and were helping them adapt to the culture.

“I love tea with milk though I do not know how to differentiate camel milk from cow milk, their food is good and I am planning to taste camel and goat meat soon,” Rodriguez said.

Police sources indicated that the outlawed militia group Al Shabaab from neighbouring Somalia ambushed the two medics as they headed to their work station.

The armed militia group shot dead a security officer attached to the medics before they sped off to Somalia in two cars.
