Chelsea managed to move to
A brace from Eden Hazard – who else? – sealed all three points as the Blues look to finish in the Champions League places.
Hazard has had to come to Chelsea’s rescue on a number of occasions this season due to the problems their strikers have had in front of goal.
They’ve scored the least out of the Premier League’s top six (57) and 16 of those have come from Hazard. Pedro is their second top goalscorer on eight.
Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud and Gonzalo Higuain have all struggled, which is why rumours are circulating that Chelsea could make a move for Robert Lewandowski this summer.
But with Morata now out of the picture – the Spaniard joined Atletico Madrid in January – it’s become clear that Maurizio Sarri’s favoured choice is Higuain.
Higuain was brought in to replace Morata and in nine Premier League games he’s scored three goals, with two of those coming in one game.
Truth be told the Argentine hasn’t set the world alight, but then Giroud’s record of two goals in 24 Premier League appearances isn’t very good either.
However, there’s an argument to be made that Sarri should show more faith in Giroud due to Chelsea’s record when he starts up front.
Giroud has started 16 games in all competitions this season and won 14 of them, drawing the other two. Chelsea’s goal difference in those 16 games stands at is +33.
His record is far superior to Higuain, Hazard and Morata’s when they’ve started as
It should be noted that Giroud tends to start the easier games for Chelsea and hasn’t scored many goals, but he offers something different and maybe that’s why his record is better.
Higuain might be the world-class striker out of the two, but the numbers show Chelsea win more games when Giroud plays from the outset. Some food for thought, perhaps.
