Paul Scholes thinks Liverpool would have been “better off” playing a “real top team” in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Reds will play FC Porto on Tuesday night in the first leg of their quarter-final, which many think was the most favourable left in the draw.

And with Liverpool two points ahead of Manchester City – who have a game in hand – in the Premier League title race, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes thinks that Liverpool would’ve been better off facing Barcelona or Manchester City.

When asked whether he thinks Liverpool will progress, Scholes told the Daily Express: “I think they will do.

“It just feels a little bit like the Champions League is getting in the way of the league run for Liverpool. They might have been better off playing off a Barcelona or a City, a real top team, and getting knocked out.

“That would possibly clear the way just to concentrate on that league. Porto aren’t a bad side, we know that, they’re in the quarter final but you’d expect Liverpool to come through that.”
