Tottenham finally opened their brand new Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium on Wednesday in the Premier League eight months later than it was planned.
Spurs took on Crystal Palace and following a stunning opening ceremony that involved fireworks and a light show, Mauricio Pochettino’s men secured a 2-0 victory.
Son Heung-min opened the scoring in the 55th minute before Christian Eriksen eased tensions 10 minutes from time.
Harry Kane had been hoping to score the first goal at the new 62,062-seater stadium having scored the last at White Hart Lane, but that didn’t take anything away from the experience.
Speaking after the game, the England captain said: “It was special. It was a big game for us.
“We hadn’t been in the best run of results so we had to stay focused but use the energy of the crowd and the occasion to our advantage. I thought we did that.
“Being on the pitch just felt like home. In the final year at the old White Hart Lane we finished unbeaten and I hope this will be the same.
“Obviously we have got four home games [in the league] left to look forward to and hopefully we will get the results.”
Spurs now boast one of the best stadiums in the Premier League and the atmosphere on Wednesday night was electric.
However, it has to be said that they only managed an attendance of 59,215 – over 600 less than Arsenal managed for their game against Newcastle on Monday (59,869).
What matters is the atmosphere each stadium generates, though, and a fan video has emerged claiming to show the difference between the Emirates and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
OK, so the noise from inside the new White Hart Lane is undoubtedly louder than the Emirates in the video, but what do you expect on the opening day of a new stadium?
The footage from the Emirates was most likely of a lull during a regular Premier League game, too, so of course it’s not going to be as loud.
It will be interesting to see which set of fans is cheering louder by the end of the season.
