Kenya win Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens

Kenya Lionesses registered their second win at the World Sevens Series Women’s qualifier at Hong Kong beating the hosts 36-5 on Thursday April 4, 2019.

Grace Adhiambo and Diana Awino bagged a brace with Camilla Atieno and Phila Olando getting on the scoresheet. Janet Owino and Grace Odhiambo(2) were sure with their kicks.

Tournament winner will qualify for next season’s Women World Sevens Series as a core team. Kenya tops pool B with six points, ahead of second placed Papua New Guinea due to points difference.

Hong Kong and Uganda are third and fourth respectively with two points respectively.

Kenya’s last pool game will be against Papua New Guinea at 11.14am. PNG beat Hong Kong 22-14 and Uganda 32-0 to set up a thrilling pool clash with Kenya.

Prior to the second game, the Lionesses had beaten Uganda 24-0 courtesy of tries by captain Phila Olando, Janet Okello, C Linda and Grace Adhiambo. The Nakuru RFC star converted Okello and Lindo’s tries.

Missed tackles were proving to be costly for Hong Kong against Kenya and in contrast the Lionesses kept their opponents out and worked well in attack.

The home side weren’t disheartened and instead pressed themselves. They worked a penalty wide to the right, creating a two-on-one and Sarah Lewis scored her first international try for Hong Kong.

Pyle’s chase didn’t manage to halt another Kenyan try but the home side were still playing with an abundance of energy and were relishing being on home soil.

Christy Cheng thought that she was in on the right, Hong Kong worked so hard to create space but she was hauled in.

Kenya then rubbed salt into the wound by racing down the other end and scoring. Grace Adhiambo was the lady with the pace and she then converted her own try to finish their work.
