Inside the billions government owes contractors

It is highly unlikely that the subject on Kenyan government debt is going anywhere.

This is the National Treasury has in a new report revealed that the government owes contractors and suppliers a whooping Sh32.4 billion.

National government Committee of Implementation on Tuesday evening tabled the report to Treasury, breaking down the figures:

According to the report, the Defence Ministry has the highest debt pegged at Sh.8.9 billion.

The Ministry of Health on the other hand has an outstanding bill of Sh7.1 billion while the Interior Ministry debt is at Sh5.4 billion.

Pending bills within State Departments include Infrastructure (Sh7.5 million), Correctional Services (Sh914 million), Broadcasting and Telecommunication (Sh3.2 billion) and Regional and Northern Corridor Development (Sh1.4 million).

The National Treasury in light of this directed all government entities to ensure that all debt is paid before entering into any new commitments.
