Parents and society alike don’t realize just how much power we give to our teachers by entrusting our children’s lives with them.
A teacher can be described as a child’s second parent, that is why what this teacher did to innocent unsuspecting children remains heartbreaking to say the least.
A teacher, surnamed Wang allegedly poisoned 23 children at a kindergarten by tampering with their morning porridge.
It was alleged that the teacher carried out the perturbing act to get revenge on a colleague following a dispute.
The pupils in Jiaozuo in the Henan province, central China, were taken to hospital after they began vomiting and fainting on Wednesday morning, according to local reports.
One parent claimed he rushed to hospital where doctors had already pumped his child’s stomach.
A child has been left with ‘severe’ symptoms while seven others remain in hospital for observation, reports say.
Photographs appear to show children lying in hospital beds hooked up to drips.
The teacher has been arrested and taken into custody following the incident, the South China Morning Post reports.
“When I arrived at the school, my daughter had already passed out,” one dad said, according to the Daily Mail.
“Besides my kid, there are three or four other children all looking sick and very pale.
“My child said the porridge tasted bitter and salty when it was supposed to taste sweet.”
Investigations have revealed that that the children had ingested sodium nitrite.
The substance is used in the curing meats but can be toxic when ingested in high amounts.
Jiaozuo town chiefs have already imposed new regulations which says teachers have to dine with their pupils.
Schools are now also required to publicly identify food sources and suppliers, and set up risk prevention and control systems.
As authorities continue to look into the matter, it is of utmost importance parents and the government start teaching teacher’s with respect. Aren’t we lucky that as a nation the worst we’ve seen is teachers striking?
Parents should also remember that teachers are there to teach basic curriculum, not life skills which a child should be equipped with from home.
