Kajiado governor Joseph Ole Lenku has pleaded with deputy president William Ruto to compel the Kenya Meat Commission to pay Kajiado farmers their dues.
The Governor said KMC owes livestock herders millions of shillings for animals bought during the last drought off-take programme.
” We are in yet another drought and animals are dying. We haven’t been paid for livestock taken last year, ” said the Governor.
Records show Kajiado farmers are owed Sh 490 Million by KMC in unpaid debts with Sh 300 Million accruing within the last one and a half years.
“We seek your help on the plight of hundreds of farmers who are languishing in poverty for these unpaid debts by KMC,” said the Governor.
The Governor was speaking at ACK St Peter’s Emakoko church in Kajiado East during a fundraiser in aid of construction of a Multi-Purpose Hall.
The fundraiser was led by ACK’s Bishop Gadiel Lenin and graced by Deputy President William Ruto who donated Sh 2 Million.
Governor Lenku donated Sh 400,000, Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal gave Sh 100,000 while area MP Peris Tobiko gave Sh 50,000.Former Governor David Nkedianye donated Sh 30,000.
At the same church function, Governor Lenku said in the presence of the DP that no investor would be allowed to operate in contravention of county and national laws.
In a reference to his feud with the soda ash miner, Lenku said the company had broken the County’s Finance Act, Public Health Act and the Mining Act.
“Impunity by multi-nationals will not be entertained in Kajiado County.
Observe the law and we shall be open to do business.Otherwise, you must exit Kajiado,” he said.
Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia also attended the church service.
