Ford Kenya blasts Jubilee over Migingo Island hypocrisy

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is welcomed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula has blasted president Uhuru Kenyatta over his hypocrisy on Migingo Island that has been a tussle between Kenya and Uganda.

Wetangula said that Uhuru administration failed to stamp authority on Migingo Island when he meet Uganda president Kaguta Museveni in Mombasa yesterday.

He said Migingo was squarely within Kenyan territory but the Kenyan government has let the Ugandan authorities occupy the island illegally.

The former foreign affairs minister said the two states jointly surveyed the area and established that Migingo was on the Kenyan side, but blamed the Kenyan authorities for neglecting and failing  to protect the area.

“As a minister in charge of foreign affairs then, alongside national security team with our counterparts in Uganda jointly raised funds and we did survey from Kibich Southern Sudan to the border with Tanzania, the problem has been our government by  not deploying our police and erecting our flag, we have been absent” Said Wetangula

The Bungoma senator noted that Uganda was Kenya’s major trading partner and thus the two states must ensure cordial relationship.

He called on the two governments to partner and seek other development partners that will support  expansion of the Mombasa –Malaba-Kampala highway into dual carriage a move he says will ease transport and improve the bilateral trade.

Wetangula further faulted the Kenyan government for imposing several huddles for regional traders through the many police roadblocks along the major highways thereby causing unnecessary delays to the transporters adding that this has promoted corruption.

He said such huddles have influenced the decision by the Rwandan government to change route and use the Tanzanian Port.
