For so long, the balance of intellectualism in Luo Nyanza has been resting in Central Nyanza. However, this balance is slowly shifting to South Nyanza. There is a breed of well-grounded and intellectually gifted young men with concrete credentials mushrooming in South Nyanza.
Within this clique of accomplished men, there is also a crop of unquestionably pseudo intellectuals. These are undisputed bright guys with no known credentials but with an insatiable penchant for quick fixes in life.
If you are here in Nairobi, you have probably bumped into these flashy and jazzy young Luo men in bespoken suits.
Their pompous introduction laced with nasal twanging and English proficiency will make worst judges of characters misconstrue their real personality. They will often have dubious and real titles preceding their real and imagined names such as Dr. So and So. This is meant to raise their stakes higher and elevate their engagement credibility.
Since these men started invading the city, investors in this town know no peace. Both the real and pseudo intellectuals engage in this infamous field work to reap where they didn’t actually sow. The former devour high level international investors while the latter deal with these usual ones plus being errand boys for their masters.
Their lives are largely characterized by a single week of opulence and a whole month of proper squalor before they fleece another unsuspecting investor. Flying over to Watamu on a Friday, holding sex orgy parties that night and basking in the coastal sun on Saturdays with sexual philanthropists in their bikinis make them forget that on Sunday they will start making frantic calls looking for fare back in Nairobi.
The difference between these two balances of intellectualism lies in their use.
While the Centralers use their brain power for literary contribution, political input and development of jurisprudence with some of them being renowned laureates in the realm of medicine, law, engineering, literature and politics, the Southerners use theirs to fleece investors with reckless abandon.
