Tycoon Humphrey Kariuki takes his dual citizenship saga to court

Bold and daring business tycoon Humphrey Kariuki has moved to court a law on the declaration of dual citizenship.

Kariuki the owner of Africa Spirits Limited is embattled by huge tax evasion allegations investigations.

The Kenya Revenue Authority is carrying out investigations jointly with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after large consignments of counterfeit excise stamps and suspected illicit ethanol were found within the firm’s premises.

During the operations that commenced on the night of January 31, an estimated 21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 litres of illicit products were seized, according to KRA.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti was shocked after learning Nairobi billionaire Humphrey Kariuki is a citizen of Cyprus.

Kinoti told reporters that they would add a charge of failing to declare dual nationality in addition to their existing investigations on tax evasion.

We are questioning him on that issue since failure to declare dual citizenship is an offence,” the DCI boss said.

A person who fail to do so is said to have, “committed an offence and shall be liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding five million shillings or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both”.

Africa Spirits is a licensed manufacturer of potable spirits including Glen Rock, Legend Black, Blue Moon, Legend Brandy, Gypsy King and Furaha.
