The cracks, stretching several kilometers along the Mai Mahui Narok road n some areas around Naivasha have been the center of speculation recntly.
last year, large fault lines were witnessed at Suswa area cutting Mahi Mahiu Narok road into two. The faults were as deep as 10 meters. Last Sunday, after the light earthquake, fault lines also emerged along Mahi Mahu Naivasha road.
This has caused a lot of panic among the residents living in this areas. But did you know what causes these lines? Here are the reasons’
First, the two areas lies on the bedrock of the Northern Rift Valley which stretches all the way from Ethiopia to Tanzania in the South. The paths along these areas still experience active drifting and faulting activities hence loosening of rocks.
Initially, the appearance of the cracks were linked to massive earth movements but the government has dismissed claims that the country could be split into two following the emergence of the fault lines in Suswa area.
According to Omenge, numerous studies done in the area revealed underground washing of soil as the major contributor.The Principal Secretary who led senior government officials on a fact-finding mission in the area said the government was alarmed by increasing statements that the country could split into two due to tectonic movements.
