Barclays Bank employs precaution as they shut down safe deposit box applications

The Tuesday incident where Ksh 2 billion were intercepted ina client safe box has called for precaution in Barclays Bank.

It has frozen applications for safe deposit boxes following the discovery of fake money and gold inside its Queensway branch in Nairobi on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, CEO Jeremy Awori said the bank was also reviewing the existing safe boxes

“We would like to reassure you that we have robust processes to ensure that all currency dispensed over our counters and ATMs is genuine and that items held in safe deposit boxes are separate from the bank deposits,” Jeremy Awori said.

Eric Adede, the prime suspect whose safe was discovered to be having fake billions and yet another one which had gold in it is in custody and court has ruled that there is no bail.

The 4 suspects will be held in custody for five days as investigations continues.

Two Barclays employees who had been arrested in connection with the fake currency have been released and will be prosecution witnesses in the case.
