The government launched a new mode of payment for the social cash transfer programme on Tuesday.

Under the new model, the elderly and most vulnerable will now be able to withdraw the money from their bank accounts using ATM cards or over the counter.

The new system is a departure from the past, when the recipients picked cash handouts from banks.

Social Protection PS Nelson Marwa said the government will this month disburse Sh12.5 billion to banks.

“The elderly will not have to go as far as 100km to access their money,” he said.

The new system is meant to ensure only genuine beneficiaries receive the cash.

“Corruption will reduce as the system is now orderly and the elderly will be able to access their money with ease,” Marwa said.

The cash transfers programme targets orphans and vulnerable children, the elderly and people with severe disability.
