The government wanted to acquire land in Turkana by force

The Government has been barred from acquiring by force about 20,618 hectares of land where the oil wells in Turkana sit.

In a notice dated 8th February, 2019, South Lokichar Basin Oil Project, NLC through the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining looks to gain 6,348 hectares of land to mine the oil

Another notice dated Februart 2019, the commission for the benefit of Lapsset Development Authority looked to verify 20,618 hectares of land for the development of Lapsset Corridor Project and Ancillary offices.

The County Government through lawyer Nelson Havi argues that NLC had not locked in the County towards the procurement of the land and had continued to start the securing of the land in complete negligence of the constitution and the Land Act.

The area needs the Environment and Land Court to regard the issue as pressing and should be heard and decided speedily on the ground that the obligatory securing of the land will dislodge neighborhood occupants.

They contended that the applicant’s activity embraced without conferences would disturb the arranging of Turkana County, which has officially planned its vital urban advancement plan 2011-2030.
