From Graft to Drug barons: Top Crime, corruption stories that made headlines

Kiambu County seems to have lots of tax evaders especially liquor distributors. Weeks after Kenyan authorities launched a manhunt on Africa Spirits limited over tax evasion, another liquor distributor is under search. Police on Saturday night raided Two Cousins Distillers Limited in Thika as part of an investigation into allegations of tax evasion and other offences. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) explained that the raid came after officers confiscated contraband goods en route to Karuri, Kiambu County.  “The driver of the vehicle was arrested and investigations led DCI detectives to Two Cousins Distillers-Munene Industry,” it said.

SUICIDE

And in another story A 20-year-old woman from Kisumu County has allegedly committed suicide after a bitter exchange with her aunt over chapati. The deceased only identified as Sharon is said to have hang herself after being accused of misusing money to buy chapati and beans.

KENHA PROBE

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is probing Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) officials over tenders worth more than Ksh4.2 billion.

Investigations centre on allegations of tenders awarded irregularly, including to entities that forged documents.

The multi-agency investigation was sparked by a whistle-blower.

“Let me report to you that we were coerced to recommend some contractors who were not eligible and others were among the lowest bidders. In most cases they did not have the mandatory requirements,” a letter by the whistle-blower read.

MBADI WARNS RUTO

National Assembly minority leader John Mbadi has urged Deputy President William Ruto to stop defending government officials accused of graft.

He said the recent claims by Ruto that only Sh7 billion had been utilised in construction of Kimwarer and Arror dams in  Elgeyo Marakwet implies that he defends government officials who face investigations.

“It is wrong for the Deputy President to say that only Sh7 billion was spent yet the whereabouts of other funds meant for the projects are still under investigation. Such comments show there is something he knows which other Kenyans don’t know,” Mbadi said.

He spoke on Saturday during a fundraiser for construction of a dormitory in Okok Secondary School, Ndhiwa constituency.  

NIGERIAN DRUG LORD DEPORTED AGAIN

A Nigerian drug lord was this week arrested and deported for the second time after making a mysterious return into the country.

According to the Department of Immigration Services, it is not clear howKelvin Adeshina Akinjiola returned to the country after being deported in 2018.

He was first expelled from the country on July 10, 2018 by Interior Cabinet Security Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence has really been on the rise, day in, day out we hear stories of Kenyans who either killed themselves or their loved ones. Recently, a man hacked his wife and baby to death then committed suicide at his house at Bate village in Magarini Sub-county. Dagamra Location chief Daniel Kiti said 30-year-old Azan Charo Kadenge used a knife to slit the throat of his 27-year-old wife Mapenzi Charo Ngala and their four-month-old baby on Friday afternoon.

 “I was at a prize giving day event when I received a call from a neighbour; I rushed there but unfortunately the man had already committed the acts. We await for the police to secure the scene,” he said. Azan had just moved to his new home after a disagreement with his father over bhang smoking.
