A section of elders from the Chuka community has threatened to move to court to challenge a boundary between Chuka and the newly created Igambangombe sub counties.

They claimed the newly created sub county had extended into the Chuka side.

The elders’ spokesperson, Isaac Mugo, said some politicians want to divide the Chuka community for political gains.

Mugo said they will not allow the creation of Igambang’ombe sub county, which is currently in the gazettement stage before their concerns are addressed.

The elders said the issue could create animosity between the Tharaka and Chuka sub tribes if not handled carefully.

“We have written to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene. We want clarification…the boundary issue has created a lot of confusion and we fear it could result in conflicts,” Mugo said.

Mugo spoke to the press during a meeting at Ndagani Shopping Centre on Wednesday.

However many residents of Igambang’ombe have welcomed the proposal saying it will end marginalisation in the area that is semi-arid.

Another elder, Gerishon Kabiti, said before such decisions are made, there must be public participation to allow the freeairing of resident’s views.

Tharaka Nithi county has three sub tribes; Chuka, Tharaka and Mwimbi across the three constituencies of Maara, Tharaka and Chuka Igambang’ombe.
