The court on Tuesday failed to find basis on the death of Baktash Akasha’s second wife, whose family insists should be investigated despite claims that it was suicide.

Soud Baktash Akasha, who died mysteriously was said to have committed suicide and quickly buried but her family in the Ukraine protested and obtained a court order to exhume her body.

Police then opened the inquest to investigate whether there was foul play involved.

However, the trial has been marred by misfortunes, as State Counsel Peris Maina told Mombasa Principal Magistrate Charles Ndegwa that two police officers failed to turn up despite being bonded to testify.

Saying that a previous trial was interdicted, Miss Maina asked the court to adjourn the hearing to allow a new investigation officer.

Thirteen witnesses, including Akasha, who is awaiting a US trial for his mastermind role in drug trafficking, have testified in the inquest that started in May 2014.

Soud died at home on June 28, 2010.

Akasha had told the court that Soud and his first wife, Najuma, were in good terms and had even danced for him as he watched the football match on the night of her death.
