This week was a little bit turbulent for Matteo Guendouzi. In the midweek encounter against Bournemouth, he made a mistake which led to the Cherries’ only goal of the game. Then, he went on to play 45 minutes against Spurs without putting a foot wrong all half.
The amazing part is that he understood his mistake better than anyone else and learned what he had to do to prevent a similar situation from happening again. And that wasn’t the case with just this week’s mistake. Guendouzi has been improving on his own errors this whole season.
“He wasn’t the best at passing, but now he flings longballs around the pitch. He was a bit positionally askew, now he understands how to stay home.”

Moreover, the Frenchman has shown that he is ready to fight for his place in the first team. He began the season in the starting XI but eventually was replaced by Torreira but he came back even stronger.

The 19-year-old’s mistake against the Cherries was his first of this calibre and it could have hurt and destroyed the player’s confidence and morale. But as we’ve seen, he only comes back stronger.

“I was worried about what the Bournemouth match might do to him, mostly because I just haven’t found many flaws in Guendouzi’s play, so I wondered if an individual mistake of that magnitude may sap at him, but it did nothing of the sort. He couldn’t have looked any more comfortable against Tottenham, driving from deep positions, spraying the ball around the pitch, and looking like he was right where he belonged.”
