Unlike their urban kin, Luos back in the villages remain rooted in most of the Luo traditions and culture. This includes belief in the existence of witchcraft, which however remains a societal issue which cannot be prosecuted in court. Here are the types of witchcrafts believed to exist in Luo Nyanza.
Eye witchcraft
This is the type of witchcraft where evil spirits are passed from the possessed person to the victim through the eye. This type of witchcraft is associated with women and is passed to others, mostly children when eating or breastfeeding.
Possession
This is also considered witchcraft though it doesn’t have any lethal effects on the society but is contained in the victim. It is the situation where one becomes possessed and behaves differently from other members of the society because of the spirits believed to live inside them.
Night running
This is called ‘juok’ or ‘pitipiti’ in Luo and entails the possessed party finding it uncomfortable to sleep at night and instead heads out to disturb others. Its believed to run in the blood and can be passed from a family to the other
